N2 - The broadcasting protocol can dramatically affect the performance of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). Proper use of a counter-based scheme can reduce the number of rebroadcasts and hence reduce the chance of contention and collision among neighbouring nodes. While most previous studies have used a fixed counter-based threshold value irrespective of node/network status, this research argues that onehop neighbourhood information could be used to dynamically estimate more suitable threshold values of the traditional counter based at a given node. This is done based on locally available information and without requiring any assistance of distance measurements or exact location determination devices. Our simulation results show that the new dynamic scheme provides good performance levels compared to the existing solutions.
