Abstract
This chapter aims at determining the extent to which transformational leadership style (TFL) predicts project success (PS) within the house construction sector in an emerging country context and whether team building (TB) mediates this relationship. A quantitative methodology to research with a survey approach was used. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that TFL, with TB as the mediating variable, is one of the missing links for PS in an emerging economy. The chapter applied theory to practice by analyzing how TFL influences PS when the leader focuses on TB within an emerging country context. The study developed a conceptual model based on the social exchange theory that could be useful for practice, policy, and research in the construction industry and replicated in other sectors. Target Audience This chapter seeks to offer strategic directions for project leaders and managers, civil engineers, project beneficiaries, project professionals, construction businesses, public sector policymakers, non-governmental organizations, and international development institutions in emerging economies. International Development agencies will find leadership strategies that fit emerging markets in this study. The new lessons are embedded in the new conceptual framework developed for use within the house construction sector in an emerging economy. Academics can ascertain the step-by-step ways of analyzing data using covariance-based SEM with the aid of Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS). The chapter can be used by academics and practitioners to guide their investigations into leadership approaches that bring sustainable success in an emerging economy.
