N2 - Purpose This study aims to investigate the motivations for adopting Smart Retail Technology among construction retailers operating in Ghana and assess the impact of this adoption on their supply chain optimization (SCO). Design/methodology/approach The study utilized the Technology-Organization-Environment (T-O-E) framework as the theoretical lens to develop a research model that was assessed via a quantitative approach using a survey. Data were collected using questionnaires from 312 construction retailers in Ghana through convenience sampling. The partial least square structural equation modeling technique was used to analyze the data. Findings The findings suggest that smart retail technology adoption (STA) by construction retailers in Ghana is influenced by customer pressure and perceived trends (PTR). Also, the adoption of smart retail technologies has a major impact on SCO. Thus, it was established that smart retail technologies improve the efficiency of supply chain processes for construction retailers. It also helps improve coordination and collaboration between retailers and their supply chain partners, helps minimize the supply chain challenges of retailers and minimizes the cost of supply chain activities, which can help improve their sustainability. Practical implications Industry players are encouraged to use the information provided in this study as a guide to the STA and implementation for the sustainable development of the sector. Policymakers are also encouraged to utilize the results of this study in their policy formulation, implementation and industry regulation duties for the sustainability of the industry. Originality/value This study highlights not just the motivators of adoption but also the benefits and importance of STA to construction retailers in Ghana. It has provided information that will be useful to retail industry players and policymakers in their quest to make the retail industry a technologically advanced one for the sustainable development of the sector.
