Abstract

School violence and adolescent mental health are topical public health issues globally. In Africa, however, the discourse regarding the nexus between school violence and mental health is emerging. This chapter explores the various forms and correlates of school violence in African educational settings, and its impact on the mental health of adolescents. The chapter further examines the role of educational systems and policies in either mitigating or exacerbating the prevalence of school violence and its subsequent impact on adolescent mental health. Finally, it explores interventions and strategies to address school violence and reduce the mental health burden in school, emphasizing the importance of research, policy, and practice that incorporates a multi-dimensional approach involving educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals to promote a safe and supportive learning environment for African youth.
