Abstract
Precision medicine involves the use of an individual’s genetic, environmental, and lifestyle variables to aid in disease prevention, diagnosis, and management. This chapter examines the incorporation of precision medicine into nephrology, elucidating how advancements in genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics have transformed the treatment of kidney diseases. Precision medicine offers advantages, such as enhanced diagnostic accuracy, individualized treatment strategies, and improved patient outcomes. Even with its potential, the execution of precision medicine in nephrology has several challenges. These challenges encompass the intricacies of data management and integration, high cost of technology, and ethical dilemmas about privacy and data utilization. These obstacles impede implementation of precision medicine and underscore the need for creative solutions and enhanced accessibility. Incorporating omics disciplines and formulating individualized treatment strategies are anticipated to enhance kidney disease management. Indeed, linking research with clinical practice will be essential in attaining the full potential of precision medicine. This chapter highlights the potential of precision medicine to improve renal disease treatment, while recognizing the obstacles and future directions.
