Abstract

The dawn of the era of gene therapy has brought about a revolutionary approach in disease therapy after which comprehensive investigations and clinical trials have yielded promising results. Gene therapy has the potential to transform medicine by using guided gene transfer to treat human disease. The objective of this strategy is to treat the fundamental cause of disease rather than just its symptoms, using the introduction of an exogenic nucleic acid sequence that is made to target mutated or affected cells in the body. Even though there have been setbacks and some challenges with regard to safety and efficacy, this has served as a platform for further investigations resulting in optimized and successful interventions in gene therapy. This chapter discusses the developments and advances in gene therapy, applications and the future of gene therapy and its positive outlook for patients, who otherwise had a poor prognosis after pharmacological or surgical interventions.
