Abstract

Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a disorder marked by proteinuria, edema, and hyperlipidemia. These symptoms may result in nutritional issues, including starvation, muscular atrophy, and electrolyte abnormalities. Medical nutrition therapy is crucial for managing NS and entails a thorough nutritional assessment and customized nutrition recommendations. The nutritional evaluation encompasses anthropometric measurements, biochemical indicators, and subjective data gathering. Nutrition-related challenges in NS include protein-energy malnutrition, hypoalbuminemia, fluid retention, electrolyte disturbances, and mineral and bone disorders. This chapter will assess the nutritional care plan for NS and examine additional nutritional factors in managing obesity while maintaining sufficient food intake for patients facing inadequate weight gain or early satiety.
