Abstract

The World Health Organization (WHO) anticipates an increase in the global ageing population, with regard to persons, 60 years and above in age, by the year 2050. The aged population of about 80 years and above by this time is expected to be about 400 million individuals. Aging is associated with nutritional vulnerability due to physiological changes, and sometimes other social and economic factors, the aged, encounter later on in life, but which could negatively affect mental health. The elderly could also be mentally vulnerable after experiencing adverse effects from various prescribed medications to treat a myriad of chronic diseases and co-morbidities. There is strong evidence that corroborates the role of dietary nutrients and nutrient supplements with the mental health of the aging population. The evaluation of the import and significance of some select and vital nutrients could provide crucial information for enhancing the quality of life and mental well-being of the aged population.
