Abstract

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects 20–25% of people worldwide and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). MetS is associated with kidney abnormalities, including activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), glomerular hyperfiltration, podocyte injury, albuminuria, and fibrosis. This chapter describes the epidemiology and pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in MetS, including the roles of obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, adipokines, oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction, and the current and future strategies for prevention and treatment of CKD.
