Managing community development through sport

This chapter focuses on the intricacies of the two arms of sport, their governance and management across borders and the role they play to contribute to community development. The development of sport in Africa has suffered setbacks due to inappropriate management practices and avoidable political interferences. Despite the huge interest in sport and abundance of sport talent on the African continent, sport development in Africa has suffered some challenges. The organization and management of sport in Africa are traced back to the inception of traditional games and festivals. In the African context, sport is often less structured and institutionalized than sport in Global North contexts. Sport laws in Africa provide tools needed by sport managers to function and need to be in tandem with policies of international sport governing bodies, while at the same time not interfering with the governance structure of international sport. The management of sport in South Africa differs from sport management in many African countries.
