Abstract
Healthcare education is constantly evolving, and the idea of supervising students on placement is changing, too. Long-arm supervision, also known as off-site practice supervision, has emerged as a dynamic model of supervision whereby a supervisor who is located at a distance from the practice placement setting takes responsibility for supervising and supporting the students. This chapter will explore long-arm supervision, clarifying its fundamental design features and exploring its multifaceted implications for allied health education. We will also critically examine the research evidence to clarify the empirical underpinnings of this model. Drawing upon practical case studies, we will present practical applications of long-arm supervision and discuss future directions of the supervision model.
