Abstract
Problems with lipids and lipoproteins are at the base of metabolic disorders, and they have been related to an increased risk of insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, non-alcoholic liver disease, and coronary and peripheral vascular disease. Indeed, hypertriglyceridemia has been linked to the development of insulin resistance, acute pancreatitis, metabolic syndrome, and some cancers. Improving our understanding of dyslipidemia and completing an accurate assessment are extremely important stages in choosing the appropriate course of treatment for dyslipidemia and maybe shedding light on the primary and secondary lipid and lipoprotein abnormalities that lie beneath it. This chapter discusses lipid and lipoprotein transport metabolism, dyslipidemia and associated disorders, and therapeutic approaches to identifying and treating lipoprotein disorders.
