Abstract

Introduction: Fluoroscopy is an essential imaging modality for diagnostic and interventional procedures. Despite its clinical importance, information on the availability and geographical distribution of fluoroscopy systems in Ghana remains limited. Reliable inventories of imaging equipment are important for health system planning, regulatory oversight, and the assessment of equitable access to specialized imaging services. Materials and methods: Data were obtained from the Regulatory Authority Information System (RAIS) at the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) of Ghana as of June 2023. A structured questionnaire was also administered to technical heads of medical facilities to validate the information. Data collected included equipment type, number, location, ownership (public/private), and authorization status. Descriptive analysis was used to assess national totals, regional distribution, and ownership patterns. Results: A total of 45 authorized fluoroscopy X-ray units were identified across 26 medical facilities. The Greater Accra and Ashanti regions accounted for 42% and 29% of the units, respectively, while the remaining 29% were distributed among eight other regions. Six regions (Ahafo, North East, Oti, Savannah, Upper East, and Western North) had no fluoroscopy units. Public healthcare facilities housed 66.7% of the units, whereas 33.3% were owned by private centers. Conclusions: The study provides updated evidence on the geographic distribution of fluoroscopy equipment in Ghana, highlighting marked disparities between regions. To improve equity in access to essential imaging services, targeted policies are needed to expand coverage in underserved areas, strengthen equipment management, and ensure planned preventive maintenance.
