Abstract
One of the greatest challenges in demographic research in Ghana is the paucity of reliable, up-to-date data on key population trends. Gaps in censuses, inconsistent birth and death registration, and limited research on migration patterns hinder effective policy planning. Without accurate demographic data, governments and institutions struggle to allocate resources efficiently, predict future needs, and address pressing socio-economic development issues. The absence of consistent demographic data affects multiple sectors, including health planning, where inaccurate mortality and fertility records hinder the forecasting of maternal health needs and in education where miscalculations in school-age populations can lead to resource shortages or excess capacity. Also, with increasing urbanisation, the lack of reliable migration data prevents proper planning for infrastructural development. Understanding population dynamics is fundamental to Ghana’s development and future development trajectory. To this end, this chapter emphasises the necessity of strengthening data collection mechanisms, advocates improved census methodologies, and showcases the impact of demographic trends on Ghana’s development trajectory. This chapter informs the reader of the contents of the book and explains why its publication is timely for Ghana’s development discourse.
