HIV Interventions: Which Should Count? Which Should Not? And Why Not?

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter identifies and discusses HIV/AIDS countermeasures. Such measures include traditional HIV prevention efforts of abstinence, fidelity, use of condoms, AIDS prevention measures such as treatment with antiretroviral medications (ARVs), nutrition interventions, as well as social care and psychosocial support. Donning a social public health lens, the chapter debates the relative importance of these interventions – emphasizing not just whether the interventions work but for whom and under what circumstances. Through such analysis, the chapter responds to the questions of “which interventions count? Which should not? And why not?” The chapter concludes with a recommendation to ensure meaningful integration of all relevant interventions into what has since the 1980s been a predominantly medical response.
