Abstract

Despite Primary Health Care (PHC) serving as the initial point of contact for those seeking health services and operates through a network of community-based health workers, clinics, and hospitals, it faces constraints relating to physical health infrastructure capacity. The continent also has low per person health spending amidst the high disease burden. The ensuing chapter explores health infrastructure finance and investment in Africa. It highlights the challenges faced by African healthcare systems, including deficiencies in national health infrastructure. This chapter also discusses historical financing and investment trends, emphasizing the role of development assistance. Recommendations include strengthening health systems, improving governance, and enhancing service provision.
