Abstract
This study examines the gender dynamics and professional success of top-rated AI freelancers on Upwork across Europe, North America, and South America. Using a dataset of top-rated and top-rated plus freelancers, the study analyzes key variables such as region, type of AI services offered, earnings, job completions, and educational backgrounds. The findings reveal significant gender disparities, with male freelancers dominating high-demand AI categories and achieving higher earnings and job completions than their female counterparts. The study highlights the need for targeted initiatives to support female AI freelancers, including enhanced access to education, robust professional networks, and policies promoting gender diversity and equal pay. It also calls for future research to explore the underlying causes of these disparities and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. By addressing these issues, the AI freelancing market can become more inclusive, unlocking the full potential of diverse talents and driving innovation and growth in the AI sector. The study’s comprehensive analysis provides valuable insights for freelancers, policymakers, and researchers, offering a foundation for fostering a more equitable and dynamic AI freelancing ecosystem.
