Abstract
In this review, we perform a bibliometric analysis of the Scopus-indexed journal articles on music and digital platforms. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, we identified 845 journal articles for the review. By performing bibliometric analysis on 824 research articles published over the last 16 years (2007-2023) in the digital platforms and music domain, this study culls out thorough insights from the countries, journals, articles, and authors’ patterns, the dominant theoretical and methodological approaches that have characterised the most influential studies, and how digital platforms and music research have evolved. Our findings show that the USA, United Kingdom, and Australia are the leaders in the production and influence of articles. The review findings further reveal that the research areas that are important in driving research in the domain include social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook in music and concepts of popular culture, which have used methodologies such as ethnography and qualitative approaches. The study contributes to the research on music and digital platforms by consolidating the present research status and, more importantly, deriving the research areas and streams that researchers can further expand as future research streams.
