Abstract
Infectious diseases are known to cause morbidity and mortality in several populations. Despite significant progress made in prevention and treatment, infectious diseases are still a threat to global health. Several infectious agents have emerged and re-emerged in recent decades due to the dynamic host-pathogen interactions, niche adaptation, and climate change. Some of the infectious agents include severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) virus, Zika virus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, and Ebola virus. These infectious agents present major challenges to public health and agricultural systems. Currently, measures to control infectious disease spread, such as conventional vaccination, rapid diagnosis, and quarantine, have not been adequate. Thus, there is a need for appropriate preventive measures, efficacious therapeutic strategies, and real-time epidemiological surveillance to help curb this global challenge. This chapter reviews existing knowledge on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, highlights factors enhancing the emergence and re-emergence of these diseases, discusses current challenges, and enumerates on future directions to aid deal with this problem.
