Creating an Inclusive Community: Promoting Lifelong Learning through Distance Education in the Rural Areas of Ghana

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The study explores the challenges of distance education (DE) in rural adults’ lives in Ghana. The purpose of the study is to establish how adults in rural communities access higher education in light of the relative unavailability of higher education options and a lack of reliable internet connection in rural communities in Ghana. DE has been the source of their access to higher education for a long time. The study therefore examines the source of motivation, and how those enroled in DE programmes manage their everyday lives amid transportation and internet connectivity challenges. The study is based on two focus group discussions and five in-depth interviews with 13 DE students in Ghana. The study’s main results include themes, such as optimism, selfconfidence, and working harder. The study shows positive optimism in the lives of those enroled in DE programmes. Considering more deeply the relationship between DE and lifelong learning, in advance of the development of sustainable communities, will help smooth the otherwise bumpy road toward a more inclusive and sustainable future.
