Abstract

Policymakers and the general public have expressed concerns regarding crime and the activities of criminals in several African countries, including South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria. Of interest also is the discussion relating to the intersection between crime, mental health and criminal justice. While many of the discussions in this book have centred on various crimes such as murder, kidnapping and internet fraud, there is limited empirical work on mental health and criminal offending in particular and the criminal justice system in general. The potential risk factors for mental health problems in African countries increases the likelihood that persons embroiled in the criminal justice system have mental health problems that warrant treatment/rehabilitation as opposed to punishment. This topical area is attractive for future criminal justice system research in Africa.
