Child Protection Systems in Ghana

Abstract

This chapter discusses the child protection systems in Ghana. Extended family still participates in the protection and support activities for children in the possibility of stretching the care environment of children beyond their nuclear family. Building a protective environment for children is indispensable for their optimal growth and development since it ensures that suffering children are easier to identify and protect. Additionally, child protection encompasses prevention and response to violence, neglect, abuse, and exploitation against children. However, the implementation of laws for the protection of children remained weak. Some of the provisions of the Children’s Act based on the UNCRC were considered socio-culturally unsuitable for Ghana.
