Abstract

Ethnicity and regional politics remain key characteristics of Ghana’s Fourth Republic. This chapter examines the dynamics in electoral politics in Ghana, 1992–2016. Utilising a political science approach, the chapter highlights how different political parties have deployed ethnicity and regional identities to compete. It also shows how other variables such as gender and religion feature in Ghana’s electoral politics for the period under review. The chapter underscores the need to transcend ethnic and regional identities if Ghana is to achieve its development objectives. Focusing on rational, issue-based politics will propel Ghana towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
