Abstract
Sustainability practice is advancing globally, and Africa is not on the side-lines. While the dominant narrative accentuates the divisions of north versus south, developed versus developing, and polluters versus victims, Africa’s arguably marginal role in defining the global sustainability agenda leaves the continent at the receiving end of development priorities removed from the continent’s realities. Just as the Global North pushes narratives such as ‘coal is bad, solar is good’, Africa caters to a population heading towards over 1 billion people by 2050, who will be more vulnerable as the continent grapples with the challenges of a just transition. However, African leaders have pledged not to play the victim anymore at the 2023 Africa Climate Week by adopting the Nairobi Declaration (AFDB, 2023), committing to amplifying Africa’s contribution to tackling global climate change.
