Abstract
A theoretical approach to optimal control problems of unsteady open channel flows is presented in the framework of variational calculus. The adjoint problem that attends an unsteady flow simulation problem characterizes the minimum principles that provide the necessary condition of optimal control. A numerical model is developed so as to solve the simulation and adjoint problem approximately.
